Who We Are
We in Crestone are a truly eclectic bunch with many retirees, spiritual practitioners of all descriptions, back-to-the landers living together – all folks who you might think have little in common. But most of us are committed to making Crestone a special place for ourselves, our guests, and future generations. Come and check us out, we think you will be delighted with what you find.
Crestone Coyote Retreat
Crestone Coyote Retreat house is tucked away in an enchanting part of the world like no other. We are situated on 24 acres of pińon and juniper in southern Colorado at the foot of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountain range at 8,000 feet in elevation, right beside a babbling creek. We enjoy plenty of peace and quiet without being isolated from the many attractions in the area. Our retreat house is located a few minutes from the small town of Crestone and its good restaurant, gasoline, and two grocery stores. Alamosa and Salida are both an hour away and each has all essentials, including many restaurants. We have good highway access from all directions and an airport in Alamosa that has connecting flights to Denver and available rental cars.

Sacred Mountains and Valleys Awaits You
Wildlife Watching / Trails.
Because of the relatively few people living here, nature here has been protected from the ever-expanding civilization that has plagued much of the Rocky Mountain West. The area abounds with wildlife. We have deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, coyotes, bobcats, black bears, golden and bald eagles, hawks, and large owls. And if you are very lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a mountain lion. We have those too.
Stargazing Wondered
Crestone has become a prime star gazing destination in recent years. Our adherence to Dark Sky Community guidelines, our many cloudless nights, and clean high altitude air has made us popular with lovers of astronomy.
Stables / Horse Trail Riding
If hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are to your liking, you will like it here. We have trials along several mountain creeks that are open to all three. We have a stable with available guided tours and horses to rent. These creeks are something truly magical as they move through stands of aspen, Ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir, providing a striking transition from the arid forests of piñon and juniper surrounding them.
Mountain life in the area
Monarch Ski Area is an hour and a half away and boasts excellent snow and very short lift lines throughout the ski season. World class flyfishing on the Arkansas River is available less than an hour and a half away outside of Salida. As it runs through Salida, the Arkansas also provides excellent river surfing which has gotten wildly popular in the last several years.
Ziggurat / Stupas and the Surrounding area
The community of Crestone is also like no other. We have a tradition going back
decades of attracting spiritual centers of all kinds. We have a Zen center, a Hindu
Ashram, and many Buddhist centers, among others. We have a well-attended Christian
church in town and a significant presence of earth based spiritual practices. A recent
Celtic celebration of spring (Beltane) drew over a hundred people. Many of the spiritual
centers are open to the public on a limited basis. There are also world renowned
Stupas and a Ziggurat within half a mile walking distance from the retreat house.
Crestone also has a tradition of owner-built homes, most of them made from earth-
friendly sustainable materials. Strawbale construction, cob(mud), adobe block, and
“earthship” homes are very popular here. We have some wild and wonderful houses,
as building restriction are loose, and creativity in architectural design is encouraged. An
earth healing Energy Fair has grown out of this tradition, is held every year, and draws
people from all over the United States.
